Updated May 2026 — New DVSA Rules

How to Book Your
Practical Driving Test

The rules have changed — only you can book your test now. Here's exactly what to do, step by step.

20+ Week average wait
2 Changes allowed
£62 Official test fee
⚠ Important — New Law from 12 May 2026

From 12 May 2026, only you can book, change, cancel or swap your practical driving test. Your instructor cannot do it for you — it's now against the law. Don't worry — TDA will walk you through every step. Read on.

What you'll need to book

Have these four things ready before you go to GOV.UK. You'll need them all to complete the booking.

Provisional Driving Licence Your licence number — the long one starting with letters from your surname
Theory Test Pass Certificate Your certificate number from when you passed — required to book the practical
TDA Instructor Reference Your instructor's ADI number — ask us and we'll give it to you. Enter this so only our available slots show
Debit or Credit Card £62 for a weekday test, £75 for evenings, weekends or bank holidays

How to book your test

Follow these steps in order. If anything's unclear at any point, just message us — we'll talk you through it.

  1. 1
Speak to your TDA instructor first
Before you book anything, have a quick chat with us to confirm you're at the right stage. We'll confirm the nearest test centre, give you our ADI reference number, and help you identify the best window to aim for based on your course dates.
Important: Get our ADI number before you go to the website — you'll need to enter it during booking so the system only shows you times we're actually available for.
  2. 2
Go to the official GOV.UK booking page
Open your browser and go to gov.uk/book-driving-test — make sure you're on the official government site (the address starts with gov.uk). Don't use any third-party booking websites; only the official site is legitimate.
Tip: Ignore any websites that charge you more than £62 for a weekday test. The only legitimate fee is the official DVSA one. Third-party services charging £100+ are scalpers.
  3. 3
    Enter your details
You'll be asked for your provisional driving licence number and your theory test pass certificate number. Enter these exactly as they appear on your documents. The system uses these to verify your identity and confirm you've passed your theory.
  4. 4
    Add your instructor's reference number
When prompted, enter the TDA ADI reference number we gave you. This is how the system knows which instructor you're with — it'll then filter the available appointments to only show slots when your instructor is free to take you. Without it, you might end up booking a time we can't cover.
Don't skip this step. Booking without the ADI reference number means you could end up with a test date your instructor isn't available for, and with only 2 changes allowed, you don't want to waste one fixing it.
  5. 5
    Choose your test centre
Select the test centre closest to where you've been having lessons. In the Liverpool area, your options include Norris Green, Speke (Garston), or Wallasey depending on where you're based. Choose somewhere you've actually driven — the routes will be more familiar.
New rule from 9 June 2026: Once you've booked at a centre, you can only move your test to one of the 3 nearest centres to that booking. So choose carefully — pick somewhere you genuinely intend to test at.
  6. 6
    Pick a realistic date
Choose a date that you'll genuinely be ready by — not just the earliest available. Talk to us about your course timeline first. A test date a week after your last lesson gives you the best chance. Because you can only make 2 changes after booking, picking the right date the first time matters.
Can't find an early slot? Book the earliest you can find, then keep checking GOV.UK regularly — cancellations come up often. You can also use a free service like TestSwap to exchange dates with another learner.
  7. 7
    Confirm and pay
You'll be asked to confirm that you are the learner who will be taking the test and agree to the DVSA's terms and conditions. Pay with your debit or credit card. You'll receive a confirmation email — keep this safe, it has your test reference number.
Cancellation window: If you need to cancel or change the date, you must do it at least 10 working days before your test or you'll lose the £62 fee. Plan ahead.
  8. 8
    Tell us your test date
Once booked, let us know the date, time, and test centre straight away so we can confirm our schedule around it and plan your final lessons accordingly. We'll make sure you're doing mock tests on the local routes in the days leading up to it.

FAQs

Can TDA book my test for me?
No — and neither can any other school. Since 12 May 2026, it's a legal requirement that only you, the learner, can book your practical driving test. What we can do is sit with you (or guide you by phone/video), walk you through the GOV.UK process step by step, and make sure everything is set up correctly.
What if I can't find an early test slot?
Book the earliest available date, then check GOV.UK regularly — cancellations appear most often on Monday mornings and late at night. You can also use TestSwap (testswap.com) — a free peer-to-peer service where learners swap test dates. You can also set up cancellation alerts via apps like Testi or Driving Test Cancellations Now.
What does "2 changes" actually mean?
Every time you move the date, change the time, switch test centres, or swap with another learner — that counts as one of your two allowed changes. If you've used both and need to change again, you'll have to cancel and rebook from scratch, losing your original slot. So choose carefully the first time.
What happens if I book a test without entering the instructor's reference number?
You may end up booked at a time your instructor isn't available. You'd then need to use one of your two changes to move it. Always get the ADI reference number from us before you book — it takes 30 seconds and saves a lot of hassle.
Can a parent or family member help me book?
Yes, as long as you are present with them while they help, and you complete as many of the steps yourself as possible. You also need to be the one who confirms your identity and agrees to the DVSA's terms and conditions during the booking process.
What if I'm not ready on my test date?
You can change or cancel your booking — but remember you only have two changes and you must cancel at least 10 working days before the test to get your £62 back. Speak to us early if you're concerned about readiness — we'd rather adjust your course than have you take the test before you're genuinely ready.
